As you can imagine, none of us got rich yet, but at least we’re trying. I am no developer, but every time we talk about software to develop, there are three words I keep repeating to him: iPhone, Twitter, Android. So far, nothing came out, but we’re boiling our brains on a regular basis to give birth to some brilliant idea. Anyway, until then… checking others’ projects is a pretty good start, and today the time has come for ImageShack’s yfrog for iPhone!

According to the official description found on code.google.com, yfrog for iPhone “is an open source Twitter client for Apple iPhone and iPod Touch,” previously known as Tweetero. Its rich list of features includes the ability to view tweets and lists as you wish, mess with the mobile notifications, schedule posts/uploads, forward tweets by email, take and send pictures that end up hosted on Yfrog.com and so on.

Since it seems everyone missed it, I guess we need a map now to find it. That reverend-liar-bastard surely disappeared to continue his quest to find it and show it to the world… so I can be sure about one thing: he’s using a map. Hahaha… but it’s not funny, considering that the idiot received donations estimated to be around (in fact AT LEAST) $70 million!!! Well, let’s leave this shit aside and move to the maps, the only part of the story above that makes any sense, as well as Leaflet, today’s maps-related topic, shall we?

I know this doesn’t look good to many people and I am not crazy about it, either, but one of the best way to describe a piece of code is, at least sometimes, to use the description coming from the people behind it, so here’s that one for Leaflet: “Leaflet is a modern, lightweight BSD-licensed JavaScript library for making tile-based interactive maps for both desktop and mobile web browsers, developed by CloudMade to form the core of its next generation JavaScript API.”

Freely available and very easy to use, Leaflet is both extensible and modular, offering support for quite a few features, including drag panning, animated zoom, double-click- and scroll wheel-powered zoom, image overlays, even hardware acceleration on iOS, smart polyline/polygon rendering and many others. A detailed list of features can be found right here, while the examples are waiting for you on this page.

At last, I think I should add a few words about browsers support, because this part looks awesome: Firefox 3.6+, Chrome, Safari 5+, Opera 11.11+ and IE 7–9 on desktops, while mobile platforms running Safari for iOS 3/4+ and WebKit for Android 2.2+ browsers shouldn’t have any problems with Leaflet, either. Hate it or love it, the iPhone is a real gold mine for developers too, not just for Apple, the carriers and those into making accessories for it, so I decided to find some nice iPhone-related piece of code to expose here today, eventually bumping into WebApp.net… so here it is in all its glory! ;)

As far as the official mumbo-jumbo goes, WebApp.Net is “a light weight, powerful javascript framework taking advantage of AJAX technology.” Just like other similar products, WebApp.Net comes packing a full set of components that are ready to be used to ease development of advanced mobile apps and, since it’s client based, it can be used with any of the server side technologies you may think of, including PHP, ASP.Net or Python, but not limited to them, of course.

Why WebApp.Net? According to its homepage, “WebApp.Net was the first framework to demonstrate the new full screen capabilities of the latest firmware from Apple for iPhone and iPod Touch” and, if that’s not enough, I should also add that “free” thingie to the equation. Of course, donations are always welcome, so…

… no matter if you’re willing to pay for a free thing or not, if you’re an iPhone developer trying to get a better framework to get the job done properly, WebApp.Net may be your lucky shot. Good luck! ;)

I also hate Facebook a little, although I use them both from time to time. It’s simply the fact that everyone started using them and both are now full of spammers and background noise. Maybe the time has come for some well done niche sites that put relevant content on first place and go as far as setting a user quota. How does that sound? I know it’s nothing but a dream, so let’s get back to Twitter and take a look at Streamie, shall we?

Why Streamie and not Twitter itself? For me, this one is better – it’s realtime, looks and feels lighter, yet keeps all the Twitter features people usually use. Sounds like a pretty good deal, right? You can also add the fact that this Twitter client is open source and things start looking not just good, but simply great!

This Web-based Twitter client known as Streamie is still in Beta stage, yet it already allows you to customize it by messing with message filtering and display settings or enable/disable geolocation (to login using your Twitter credentials and see what’s what, just go here). You can even use your background image from Twitter, although I must admit mine looked much better on Twitter.com…

… so feel free to take this piece of code for a spin – you can even put it on your own server and see how it behaves – you only need nodeJS and a few minutes of your time, nothing more! ;)

I hate this, really! I got a Facebook account long before it became the New Mecca of the Web, but the more it becomes popular, the less I like it. I think we need a Facebook killer. I would really like to see one day a social network where you have to pass admission tests. Hard admission test, with randomly generated questions that should separate spammers and retards from the rest of us – quite a brilliant idea, don’t you think?

Friendika may be just the Facebook killer some developers and users may be looking for already, but it may be not such a thing. Anyway, the idea is that we’re talking about a distributed social network application that’s worth a try – it runs on PHP/MySQL/Apache, providing a bunch of Facebook’s features, but with less privacy issues for its users, of course! ;)

According to the official mumbo-jumbo, “a single Friendika installation supports up to several thousand members” and that’s just enough for the Facebook killer I mentioned in the first paragraph. On the other hand, I am sure that a capable server can help Friendika gather around a lot of people, especially since its features list looks pretty good – micro-blogging, photo/YouTube video sharing, photo tagging, serious privacy controls, yet simple, zero maintenance and so on. Sure, shared hosting doesn’t get really close to having your own Unix server, but why get more than you need? Anyway, the idea is that people/companies who have their own Unix servers should also have some reliable tools to remotely control them…

…. and this is exactly where SSHMeIn steps in: an open source, Ajax-powered Web application that has a very noble purpose – to help you manage your remote Unix servers. Obviously, we’re talking about servers located behind firewalls, so the idea is to open SSH tunnels within the server and then allow SSHMeIn to take over.

Since most people who will be using this application don’t have to take care of a single server, I am sure they’d be delighted to find out that SSHMeIn also allows multiple servers management. Even better, you can simply organize your servers in groups, so everything becomes a real pleasure, instead of a pain in the back!

For now, this is still in Beta stage, so a lot of features are expected to become available in the near future. In case you’re not one of those brave enough to use Beta products with their precious servers, I think you should bookmark this resource anyway, since I am sure that SSHMeIn is one to keep an eye on. ;)

Unfortunately, a lot of Flash sites look and feel like s**t, and increased use of devices like the iPhone or iPad could start a slow but unstoppable process of “Flash destruction,” if things continue to evolve as they did in the last few years. Speaking for myself and from the user’s point of view, I don’t want Flash to die, I just want to get best content for my desktop computer, and best content for my mobile phone or iPad (when the moment comes, probably v3 or v4 will be decent for my needs….). Considering these, Frontal could be one of those many tools needed to help developers save Flash. Why that?
Frontal Markup Scripting Language

Think about what Frontal stands for – this is an intuitive scripting and markup language able to generate Flash, thus enabling you to quickly create sites and Web-based apps without having to write countless lines of code! To make it all worth your time, Frontal can easily embed a wide range of Web technologies, including Ajax, HTML/HTML5, JavaScript, and it even offers support for deep linking!

The official page I linked to in the previous paragraph has a lot of examples, tutorials, and a well done user’s guide, so if you want to create fluid layouts and decrease the development time, you know what to do… after all, there’s only one price: a small chunk of your time, since Frontal comes under the terms of the BSD License. I am not going to start that discussion about the device’s goodies vs. Apple’s marketing force to turn a brick into a gem, because this would take us away from the real topic of this article, namely InAppSettingsKit, described by its creators as “an open source solution to to easily add in-app settings to your iPhone apps.”
InAppSettingsKit

InAppSettingsKit is available as an open source solution for all iPhone app devs out there looking for a way to easily add in-app settings to their iPhone applications. This package allows you to maintain the Settings.app pane using an hybrid approach, so the user of your application can choose where to change the settings.

The code in this package is covered by the terms of the BSD License, so it can be easily included in free and paid apps, as long as you’re giving credit to the original developers. To make it all even more interesting, InAppSettingsKit goes beyond creating an imitation of the Settings.app behavior, since there are also some additional features available that add some extra flexibility to the product, but I’ll leave those for you to discover…

Deep inside, I am a lazy person. Sometimes, this becomes pretty obvious, but at least it doesn’t happen too often. For example, some buddies of mine released some job reviews site, and things are going pretty well for them. I was already thinking about releasing something like that, but slightly different (their site is about reviewing current/previous jobs, my idea was about something like Monster.com), and the two things blocking my way to having that up & running were… only one, in fact: lack of time and “calling” to start working. Fortunately, I just found something to help me go through, although it won’t help me kill my lazy side once and for all…
JoobsBox
… but it will help me remain lazy and get the job done at the same time! Its name? JoobsBox, of course! For those who would do anything but write a single line of code (I am usually a part of that gang, I must admit it), having such a CMS freely available is nothing less but a treasure. Just think about this – an open source job board application!!!

Yup, you got that right – JoobsBox allows your users to easily add job listings, without even having to create some user account, and predefined categories can be added to make this easy job even easier.

Built with PHP (Zend Framkework) and MySQL, JoobsBox comes with support for additional plugins, allowing you to enrich the list of current features as you wish. Sure, some coding may be needed here… or some research work, since probably somebody coded a plugin for your purpose already! ;)

Unfortunately, we’re still talking about an Alpha stage project, but since I’ve seen it at work on a few sites, I can say it’s ready to go already. After all, it has plugins, supports multiple languages, interface themes, and it’s even free! What else do you want from it?

HashMask
The idea behind HashMask is to give you a hashed representation of your password as you type, pictured as a color-filled sparkline-bordered area that’s being displayed at the end of the password entry field. Once you get used to it, you’ll never type a wrong password and press the Login button again, so adding HashMask to your site can really be a good idea.

Released under the terms of the BSD license, HashMask is a jQuery plugin that won’t get users using an old or incompatible browser in trouble, but it won’t help them see if they are typing the password right before pressing that Login button, either…

Compatibility: all major browsers with JavaScript enabled, except IE6 and, probably, the IE-based browsers installed on a computer with IE6 in place (some feedback regarding this part would be great, so if you can provide that, don’t be shy!)
