Well, they’re all used to go online, at least once in a while, so when that does happen… I guess most users will end up facing one image gallery sooner or later – agree with that? Fortunately, it seems developers have a lot of tools at their disposal to avoid deploying different apps for each device, so today we’ll take a quick look at PhotoSwipe. Ready or not, here we go…

According to the official mumbo-jumbo, PhotoSwipe “is a FREE HTML/CSS/JavaScript based image gallery specifically targeting mobile devices” aimed at developers and designers who need to add an interactive image gallery to their mobile websites while maintaining the look and feel of a native app. Fully compatible with a wide range of devices, PhotoSwipe also works like a charm with virtually all popular development frameworks and JavaScript libraries, being available as a self contained JavaScript library or, if needed, this piece of code comes packaged with a jQuery implementation as well.

Freely available for any purposes you may have in mind, PhotoSwipe offers support for orientation, allows you to easily swipe items and, when needed, images are being resized automatically, not to mention the customization options available, such as speed control of fadeIn-fadeOut effects, image scaling methods, zoom on/off and many others. At last, I should add that PhotoSwipe has no special requirements and, in case that’s not obvious already, you should know it works with all mobile and desktop browsers. Sure, some people may say that watching slideshows instead of checking a bunch of thumbnails and going for the thing you want to see is a waste of time, but when it comes to slideshows, there are plenty of pieces of code to check out, so Skitter fits in really nice into this story, if you ask me… ;)

The jQuery plugin known as Skitter is freely available, looks great and enables virtually anyone to turn unordered image lists into slideshows, offering quite a few animation types, including cubes, bars, fade effects, and so on. The options available include animation particles velocity, label display on/off or slideshow timing, not to mention that each slide’s animation type can be mentioned as a class name, allowing for easy use of multiple animation types straight inside a slideshow.

As you probably figured out by now, Skitter requires jQuery and works with all major browsers… or at least that’s what is supposed to happen, since I will be honest and confess that I wasn’t able to take it for a spin using all those mobile and desktop browsers currently available in the wild, but I am sure you’ll be so nice to drop a comment below and let us know about any compatibility issues you may encounter, right? That’s a rather funny one and, if you ask me, it’s not too far from reality. A nice image can really brighten you day, trust me! Great, but what’s better than a nice image? An entire gallery of nice images, of course, so today’s subject, namely CamanJS, fits in perfectly into this picture, don’t you think? ;)

While there seems to be nothing really special about CamanJS, the official mumbo-jumbo goes like this – “The main focus of CamanJS is manipulating images using the HTML5 canvas and Javascript. It’s a combination of a simple-to-use interface with advanced and efficient image/canvas editing techniques. It is also completely library independent and can be safely used next to jQuery, YUI, Scriptaculous, MooTools, etc.”

Latest stable release of the script came out on the 24st of February and it’s labeled 2.1 and the browsers recommended for it are these: Google Chrome, Safari 5+, Firefox 4+, Opera 10+ and, finally, Internet Explorer 9 or later. In case you’re wondering about its features but don’t want to check another site yet, you should know that CamanJS‘ simple interface grants you access to a few pretty interesting image filters, including gamma, brightness, exposure, saturation or contrast but, above anything else, this JavaScript manipulation library comes with a layer system similar to what you can find in Photoshop or Gimp, creating endless possibilities.

The reason? I simply feel overwhelmed by my photo collection and adding new galleries to it feels frightening… but that won’t stop me from taking a closer look at one pretty interesting image gallery script, namely Coppermine.

Built using PHP and MySQL, Coppermine is made available for free, being covered by the terms of the GPL license. Its last release arrived about 3 days ago, so you can’t claim that this project is not alive enough for your needs. ;) Coppermine offers a lot of interesting and useful features, such as automatic thumbnail generation, search capabilities, RSS support, slideshow and e-card capability, user feedback, image rotation and multiple files uploads, as well as many others. After all, you have the official page I mentioned above, check the features there, I’m not going to go through all that list again! ;)

The demo gallery, available here, looks pretty good, but if it doesn’t blow your mind, think about the speed and wide range of features, not to mention that most people don’t need any fancy Flash-based image gallery, just to generate thumbnails and get fast image loading times, and Coppermine surely offers much more than that, yet remaining an easy to install/use, free for all and reliable image gallery. In case you need some out-of-this-world features, then you may want to search somewhere else, or just dig deeper its documentation – there’s a lot about Coppermine, trust me! Well, that’s not so bad, after all, since I wasn’t looking at some gallery online, this was a gallery that uses Flogr, today’s topic! :)

OK, so what’s that special about Flogr, after all? Nothing really special, to be honest – it’s just one of those many open source PHP applications built to display photos hosted on various sites, this time Flickr. Obviously, there’s a bit more to say about it – this PHP piece of code is highly customizable, being able to display all your Flickr photos or only those who meet certain requirements (various tags, photosets), while providing a lot of information, such as photo details, EXIF, comments, tags and even geo-location info. Sweet!

JSN ImageShow is a flash image gallery that you can put it in your Joomla powered website. JSN ImageShow suports JPG, PNG and GIF image formats and you can put your image in any order you want. If you want to share images from Flick or Picassa, you can connect JSN ImageShow to your pictures. Also you can configure the width and height of your slideshow. You can specify the width and height in pixels and also in percentage.

If you want to put a background to your slideshow, you can choose one of your own or you can choose one from the numerous predefined images. You can also add captions: text font, color, alignment, background color, opacity, positions. After you finished setting up caption, choose from numerous effects, image motion, zooming and 3D image transition effects. If you are afraid that somebody will steal/borrow your photos, you can add watermarks. You can do this by putting an image as an overlay above slideshow images and configuring it’s position and opacity.

JSN ImageShow is available in 3 versions: Free, Pro and Developer. For the free versions there are a few restrictions: maximum showcase/showlist amount is only 3 and maximum images per showlist amount is also 3. If you want more you will have to buy the pro version which costs $39.

As long as we’re talking about original work, I don’t think “scary” should find its place in the previous sentence, but things are quite different, unfortunately, because this growth comes with a proportional growth of plagiarized content. Oh, well, you win some, you lose some, but as long as images are nicely displayed as a slideshow, one may overlook the fact they can be seen on 2345 websites… ;)
Gradually MooTools Plugin

Today, I’ll tell you a few words about a Gradually, a rather simple MooTools image slider, one that allows you to display the images using a certain order, as well as to display informative text for each of them. Even better – and exactly as I was expecting – this piece of code is free to use, being available under the terms of the MIT License.

Gradually uses the HTML5 canvas element to create a pretty cool transition effect (nothing out of this world, anyway, but I’ve surely seen a lot of less interesting effects so far), requiring an unordered list of images and employing the alt tag value to display the informative text. Compatibility: all major browsers, but IE requires excanvas – at least for now…

Moa is written in PHP and uses MySQL for data storage. Moa is not intended for people who want comments or ratings and it doesn’t require registration or login usernames. Moe is for people who want to share on their website their pictures from holidays, pictures wih their family and other personal photos.

With Moa you can create galleries and sub-galleries. Also you can put your photos into galleries based on keyword tags. You don’t need to make the thumbnails because Moa generates them automatically. In the admin panel you can check for corruption and lost or un-tagged images.

Moa allows a hierarchical gallery structure and allows images to appear in more than one gallery without re-uploading. Galleries can be made and will auto-populate with any images that have matching tags. Because Moa was created for users with basic needs, adding, editting and deleting galleries or images is easy.

Moa is released as Open Source under the zlib/libpng license. Download Moa from here. The creator of the script put on his website a Live Demo of Moa, so you can try it before you download it.

AnythingSlider
… it all becomes pretty interesting when we look at AnythingSlider, a jQuery plugin created to display not only images, but any kind of HTML content. Before I tell you a few words about the features, just take a look at the demo, all right?

Good… now, here’s what AnythingSlider has to offer, in case you didn’t check the demo properly: dynamically added navigation tabs, next/previous arrows, custom function for formatting navigation text, autoplay, autoplay pause on hover, as well as hashtagged slides with the advantages you get from this (can link to specific slides or have multiple sliders on a page).

Since it’s free to use and looks pretty good, if you think that AnythingSlider can get your job done… go for it! ;)

With over 50,000 downloads so far, Plogger claims to belong to “the next generation in open-source photo gallery systems” while offering a very straightforward design and succeeding in remaining very easy to setup and use.

Integrating it into a website is nothing more than “inserting three lines of PHP code,” but this 388kb piece of code comes with all the goodies a basic-average photo gallery needs: a template-based theme system, a full XML generator, multilanguage support, image description fields, automatic thumbnail generation, and even more!

Since you don’t have to believe without seeing, here’s the demo gallery. Now, you know all you need to be interested in trying it for yourselves… or not. ;)
