While I can work in a team, I usually hate teamwork. The main reason is the fact that my work could be influenced by other’s mistakes, but I can’t say I am really that much into other people, either. These being said, I’ll turn things upside down and tell you a few things about a collaboration platform usable by small teams and enterprises, as well. What, you were expecting a tool for solitary freelancers? Lol, not today, that’s for sure!

TeamLab is our subject today, and the story is pretty short – it comes in a hosted and open source version, both freely available, enabling you to easily create teams, manage projects, setting milestones, creating tasks, and so on. Hey, it even has a built-in instant messaging client, integrated blogging, forum, and the 2-minute introductory video tutorial can help you get a clear idea about it without wasting time. Awesome!

Unfortunately for PHP fans, TeamLab requires ASP.NET and MySQL, SQLite or ADO.NET databases to work on your server. Oh, well, if you’re happy with the name.teamlab.com URL format, you can go with the hosted version, at least for a while…

Compatibility: all major browsers, at l;east until someone proves me wrong…

Some people use PHP, others Python, and there are also a bunch of them using ASP. NET. Sure, some listen to jazz, too, so diversity can’t hurt, as long as you’re happy with the thing you got, and because I don’t want to discriminate, today I have a little something for all those into ASP. NET!

More than just one script, SharpPieces is a collection of 8 components, all open source and free to use! The list goes here: ExtendedDropDownList, LiveGrid, FancyUpload, ImageCheckBox, Rating, DynamicImage,
CaptchaImage, GradientButton. If I remember well, we talked about FancyUpload already, but now we’re having it as a part of a gang here…

To see all the components above in action, you should go and see the demo area and see if these sharp pieces of code match your needs or not. The whole package has about 250K in size, and the official page also offers a bunch of docs for each component. That’s all, folks, time for you to explore now!

Compatibility: all major browsers, Adobe Flash and MooTools required by some component (just check the demos/documentation and you’ll get a better picture of the whole compatibility part)

A few years ago, a friend of mine told me he was working on some project, and I asked him about the language used, being almost sure he was employing PHP to get the job done. The surprise came when I found out he was into ASP.NET, and I remembered about that story a few minutes ago, when I bumped into FormFields…

… a piece of code that makes it easier to come up with form entry fields using ASP.NET by taking out of question those validation, dropdown list databinding, or regular expression headaches and handling them for you. Some may say this is for lazy people… but I would gladly cut my left arm instead of having to handle regular expressions!

The look and feel of the resulting forms can be customized via CSS, and FormFields’ basic requirements are only two: .Net Framework 3.5 & AjaxControlToolkit. These being said, I hope I just managed to help some of you escape those regular expression-power headaches. That would really make me happy, I can tell you!

Compatibility: I wouldn’t bet my life on it, but it seems FormFields-generated forms work with all major browsers, since I tested it with Opera, Flock, IE8, as well as Safari
